Investment in Romania’s postal sector grew by almost 30% in 2022

Postal market players invested RON 360 million in 2022, i.e. 8% of annual revenues. Supporting parcel traffic was the main driver of investments, materialized by an increase of almost 80% in the number of automated systems, up to almost 4,500. Total revenues from postal services exceeded RON 4.6 billion (+11%), 81% of which were generated by parcel traffic. Infographic here.
Key statistics about the postal services market in Romania in 2022
Small parcels/packets:
Small parcel/package traffic increased in 2022 by 6% to 232 million items, i.e. 12 parcels per inhabitant. Although traffic growth slowed down compared to the previous years, it was compensated by the steeper growth of revenue from parcels (+13%), up to RON 3.8 billion.
- The average revenue per parcel was amounted to over RON 16 (RON 13 for domestic parcels)
- The number of providers using automated delivery systems (easybox, packetomat, etc.) has reached 10, so that 1 in 7 domestic parcels was delivered through them
- Almost 9 out of 10 domestic parcels were delivered within 1 day from the date of entering the postal network, the average delivery time being 1.2 days
- International parcels generated revenues of RON 1 billion
- By number of parcels, the top 3 providers are: Delivery Solutions – Sameday (28%), Fan Courier (26%) and Cargus (13%)
Items of correspondence and printed matter:
- Revenues increased by 7% (reaching almost RON 0.8 billion), although traffic decreased by 9% (303 million items)
- The average revenue per item increased to RON 2.6 (+17%)
- On average, domestic correspondence and printed matter were delivered in 2.7 days
- By number of items, the most important providers are CN PoÅŸta Romana (52%) and Pink Post (41%)
Complaints:
- 15 complaints per 10,000 items were filed in 2022
- The number of grounded complaints increased by 12%, in 2022 (almost 130 thousand), for two thirds of which damage compensation was awarded
- The average value of compensation decreased by 8%, to RON 202
Number of employees:
- decrease by 4% in the sector as a whole, given the reduction by over 1,000 employees of CN Poșta Romana staff
- On average, a postal employee generated annual postal revenues of RON 127 thousand, up 12% compared to 2021
Information from market research
- The quality of services, tariffs and safety of items were the main criteria for choosing the provider by residential users who sent parcels
- More than half of respondents made online purchases several times a month: 12% once a week or even more often, and 43% several times a month
- More than half of respondents (56%) used automated systems in the past 12 months:
- 1 in 5 respondents would use them, but they do not exist in their area
- Three quarters of respondents would agree the delivery to be slower (by 1-3 days) while paying less for it
