33 Postal Items per Romanian in 2007

ANC made public today the statistical data report on the 2007 Romanian postal market. According to these data, in 2007, the total postal traffic registered 702,981,707 postal items, i.e. on average, 32.65 postal items per inhabitant, increasing from 26.72 in 2006 and, respectively, 22.67 in 2005.

 

97.32% of the total postal traffic was domestic (684,175,553 items), whereas only 2.68% was cross-boarder (18,806,154 items). The report indicates that domestic traffic constantly grew, in the last three years, from 472,703,114 processed in 2005 to 555,039,393 postal items processed in 2006 (a 17.42% increase), amounting to 684,175,553 postal items in 2007 (a 23% increase compared to 2006). However, cross-boarder traffic decreased from 21,271,732 postal items processed in 2006 to 18,806,154 in 2007 (a decrease by almost 12%), after it registered a 23% increase in 2006 compared to 2005.

 

In 2007, 93.90% of the total postal traffic – 660,129,452 items – consisted of postal items up to 2 kilograms, i.e. items of correspondence, invoices, bills, newspapers, magazines, direct mail, registered items and small parcels. The number of the abovementioned postal items increased by 19% compared to 2006.

 

In 2007, the postal service providers collected and distributed 22,767,454 postal parcels weighing more than 2 kg, i.e. 3.24% of the total postal traffic. 95% of these were domestic items and only 1,045,042 parcels left or entered the country , by means of the postal service providers. In 2007, there were by 256% more parcels than in 2006, due to the number of domestic parcels, which increased by 400%, whereas the number of cross-border items dropped by approximately 50%.

 

The rest, 2.86% of the total number of postal items, belonged to Express services, which increased by approximately 21% compared to 2006, up to 20,084,801 items. Express services include direct and rapid delivery services, often with a confirmation receipt, the providers assuming the responsibility to deliver the items on a certain deadline.

 

In 2007, there were 248 authorised postal service providers. 224 of these sent statistical data to ANC, 142 of which declared no activity in 2007.

 

Concerning the workforce in this market, in Romania, there were 44,697 people employed in this sector in 2007, 35,801 of which worked for CNPR (80.10% din of the total number of postal employees), compared to 43,299 in 2006 (of which, 34,935 worked for CNPR).

 

In 2007, there were 7,580 access and contact points operational in Romania, i.e. 3.18 postal subunits/100 Km2. On average, a postal unit served 2,840 inhabitants, compared to 2006, when we had an index of 2,850 inhabitants/postal unit and to 2005 - 2,901 inhabitants/postal unit.
