Netograf: the average download speed for fixed and mobile internet increased in 2023
According to ANCOM’s statistics based on tests carried out within the Netograf platform, in 2023 users in Romania enjoyed an average download speed of 587 Mbps for fixed cable internet - up by approximately 10% compared to the previous year - and an average upload speed of 548 Mbps, up 20% compared to 2022. There is also a significant increase in average transfer speeds of fixed networks over WiFi, from 135 Mbps in 2022 to 156 Mbps in 2023 for download and from 111 Mbps to 126 Mbps for upload. Moreover, mobile internet saw an average download speed of 39 Mbps, slightly higher compared to the previous year, and an average upload speed of 12 Mbps.
Average download and upload speed - fixed internet
In 2023, approximately 85,000 valid tests were performed through the Netograf platform with regard to the top 5 fixed internet providers – ranked by number of connections.
Thus, the average download speed for fixed cable internet increased by approximately 10% compared to the previous year, reaching 587 Mbps - with regard to the top 5 fixed internet providers. Furthermore, average upload speed increased by 20%, to 548 Mbps.
With wireless connections to fixed networks being increasingly used, 2023 saw an average download speed for fixed internet over WiFi of 156 Mbps, up 15% compared to 2022, and an average upload speed of 126 Mbps, up 13% year-on-year - with regard to the top 5 fixed internet providers.
Analysis of fixed internet statistics for 2023 generally show a consolidation of a balancing trend in average download and upload speeds achieved on the fixed networks (cable and WiFi) with respect to the top providers on the Romanian market - ranked by number of connections -, which proves that electronic communications services are adapting to users' needs.
Average download and upload speed - mobile internet
As for the mobile internet access service, statistics from tests conducted by users on the Netograf platform in 2023 reveal an average download speed of 39 Mbps (compared to 38 Mbps in 2022) and an average upload speed of 12 Mbps (compared to 15 Mbps in 2022).
In 2023, approximately 31,000 valid tests were conducted on Netograf with regard to mobile internet providers.
About Netograf
Netograf is more than just an internet speed test application. It is an electronic platform designed by ANCOM to provide internet users in Romania with an independent, objective and free-of-cost tool for constantly checking the quality of the internet access service. Users can periodically check whether their Internet service corresponds to the quality specified in the commercial offer and in the contract concluded with the electronic communications provider. The Netograf platform includes a web application available at the address www.netograf.ro, through which users can test the quality of their internet connection using an internet browser, both from fixed devices (desktop, laptop) and mobile devices (mobile phones, tablets), an application dedicated to fixed terminals for Windows, which can be downloaded from the respective website, and applications dedicated to mobile terminals for Android and iOS operating systems, available in app stores (Google Play for Android and App Store for iOS).
